Corporate social investment

Objective

Our approach has always been, and will always be, to focus on the development of people who may enter the financial services arena in the future. Where possible, we also provide the opportunity for the transfer of practical skills or knowledge in the form of training - where this will benefit incumbents in the industry.

Achievements

In 1998, Gryphon established an educational trust with the objective of providing financial assistance to individuals from previously disadvantaged backgrounds. In addition to providing financial assistance to students, Gryphon also offers the opportunity for these students to gain practical training. This is achieved through vacation work and shadow periods.

Trustee training was also provided to trustees of funds previously managed by the group.

A skills training approach

Our practical experience over the course of the past few years has led us to conclude that "skills transfer" rather than "shareholding" has achieved a significantly greater contribution to the empowerment of previously disadvantaged individuals and the asset management industry in general. We note with interest that recent empowerment deals within the asset management industry have adopted this approach too.
We remain committed to empowering our business and will, as in the past, strive to remain at the forefront of developments on black economic empowerment.
